How to Transfer a Large Amount of Data

Transferring a large amount of data between devices does not have to be a tedious, time-consuming task. Thanks to improvements in data storage and transfer interfaces, external hard drives can carry enough space to fit an entire computer system on the drive with some room to spare, simplifying the transfer process. All you need is an external hard drive and two USB enabled computers.

Connect the external hard drive to the computer that is storing the data you want to transfer. Wait for it to be detected by your computer and a folder to appear on your desktop that is associated with the hard drive.

Locate the folder or folders that originally store the data. Click on the folder icon and drag it into the desktop icon associated with the hard drive.

Wait for the files to be completely copied onto the hard drive.

Click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray bar and click "Eject" for the external hard drive's entry. Unplug the external hard drive.

Connect the hard drive to the new computer to store the data files. Wait for it to be detected by your computer and a folder to appear associated with the hard drive.

Drag the data folders from the external hard drive's folder to the new computer's hard drive. A progress bar will open, displaying the steps of the transfer process. Eject the drive once the progress bar is complete.
