How to Modify a USB Cable to Connect IDE & HDD

You can connect hard disk drives to a computer with many different types of ports and cables. Internal drives often use the IDE connection, while external drives use a USB cable. If you want to use your internal drive as an external drive, you need to use an adapter to convert the HDD's IDE connection to the USB connection.

Connect your IDE to USB adapter to your computer, inserting the cable into one of the USB ports.

Connect the HDD to the adapter using the IDE connection.

Insert the power cable from the adapter into the power port of the HDD. Internal drives need to have power supplied to them.

Restart your computer with the new hardware connected to have the computer recognize the drive if it does not automatically.
