How Can I Get to My Desktop & Circumvent the Compaq Screen?

A common frustration among Compaq computer users is the manufacturer splash screen that appears when the system is initiating. This screen does not have a functional purpose, so disabling it will not jeopardize the stability or functionality of your system. In order to disable this, you need to know the program that controls the execution of the screen, then make a quick modification using the System Configuration Editor utility. This Windows built-in utility must be used with caution, since an error in configuration of a critical file could result in serious system stability problems.

Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructions1

Click "Start," type "sysedit" in the "Start Search" text field and press "Enter," if using Windows Vista or 7.Click "Start," click "Run," type "sysedit" in the dialog box and press "Enter," if using XP. The "System Configuration Editor" opens up.

2

Click the "C:CONFIG.SYS" window to bring it to the front of the others.

3

Look for the command line that includes "dfilter.sys" and add the text "REM" to the beginning of the line. For example, if the original command reads "DEVICE=C:CompaqSupportdfilter.sys," the modification should read: "REM DEVICE=C:CompaqSupportdfilter.sys."

4

Close the System Configuration Editor utility and restart your computer. Allow Windows to initiate. The Compaq splash screen will not display.
